Fact check: High pressure discharge lamps ban.
The "Lamps-Ban" makes an exception here – High pressure discharge lamps will remain until at least 2027.
Contrary to popular myth, High Pressure Discharge Lamps – with a few exceptions only – will continue to be fully approved in the EU. According to the RoHS directive, they will be available on the European market until February 2027 at least – possibly even beyond.
The exemptions for High Pressure Discharge Lamps can be found in the Amendment Directives (EU) 2022/275 to 2022/284 to the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. By way of example, here is an excerpt from Directive (EU) 2022/278) for metal halide lamps:
Lamps affected by RoHS:
* Exemptions by the RoHS Directive can be approved for up to five years. Applications for extensions of such exemptions can be submitted to the EU Commission up to 18 months before the deadline. Meanwhile, the current situation will remain until a new directive is adopted.
Even if fluorescent lamps gradually disappear from the market, sodium vapor and metal halide lamps may continue to accompany us for quite a while. And in the case of high wattage metal halide lamps, even Made in Germany – made by Radium.
