Good light is the A and O for us human beings - both at work and in our leisure time. Light does not only have an impact on our physical energy and motivation, it also improves our ability to react by making the visual detection of shapes and movements easier. In a nutshell: we need good light to notice objects faster. This plays an important role on the sports field, among other things.

We have already been able to demonstrate our decades of experience in the field of sports lighting with traditional light sources many times when modernising sports facilities. Today, we present the possibilities of LED football pitch lighting!
For the renovation of football pitch lighting systems, Radium offers state-of-the-art and energy-saving LED solutions to you. With our LED luminaires, which have been specially developed for sports and large areas, sports venues are optimally illuminated. We would also be very happy to assist you and provide any service and support needed in in planning and realisation, we offer you an individual lighting calculation as well as the elaboration of adjustment plans, on-site service for the adjustment of the luminaires or support with funding applications.
Radium LED luminaires
We use state-of-the-art chip-on-board (COB) technology for our LED floodlights. One special feature of our luminaires: In combination with their individualised anti-glare shades, they provide optimal, uniform illumination of the pitch while at the same time enabling a huge reduction in stray light. This minimises light immission next to the playing field, which in turn results in significantly less glare for the surrounding area.
LED football pitch lighting
In the past, football pitches typically were illuminated by 6 luminaires, in many facilities even 8 luminaires, á 2000W. With 6 spotlights, the 75 lux required by the standard is just about achieved, but the uniformity of illumination is borderline. For this reason, 8 luminaires were often installed, which can achieve approx. 120 lux on the pitch.
When refurbishing a floodlighting system, our customers expect at least the same illuminance with better lighting quality. This may be illustrated by our following calculation examples.
For optimal lighting of football pitches, we would go for 4-mast or 6-mast installations (e.g. 16m mast height):
4-mast installation
- 4 masts with a total of 36 luminaires
- Average illuminance (Em): 125 lux
- Uniformity Uo (Emin/Em): 0.75
- Total connected load: 10,800W*
6-mast installation
- 6 masts with a total of 38 luminaires
- Average illuminance (Em): 137 lux
- Uniformity Uo (Emin/Em): 0.74
- Total connected load: 11,400W*
*Can be reduced further by partial switching or dimming.
If only the minimum requirement of 75 lux is to be realised, the connected load is approx. 8.4 kW. This is equivalent to 28 LED luminaires.
Especially in populated areas, the reduction of light immission is becoming more and more important. That's why we take special care to ensure that the light only gets to places where it is needed - actually, the playing field.
