How will I find the right LED replacement for my fluorescent tube?

Three simple tricks to determine the operating mode.

LED replacement for fluorescent tube

You want to replace your old fluorescent tubes with modern LED lamps, but you are not sure which LED tube can be operated in your luminaire?

In order to check this, you should find out which ballast is installed in your luminaire at first. Three simple tricks will help you:

1. Starter check: Does the luminaire have a starter?

Check whether there is a starter in your luminaire. If so, a conventional ballast (CCG) is installed. If not, an electronic ballast (ECG) will probably be installed.

2. Dimmability check: Is the luminaire dimmable?

Check whether your luminaire is dimmable. If the light can be dimmed, an electronic ballast is installed. If not, usually a conventional ballast will be installed.

3. Smartphone camera check: Is the light of the fluorescent tube flickering?

Switch on the luminaire with your old fluorescent tube. Look at the lamp through your smartphone camera. If the picture flickers, a CCG is installed. If not, an electronic ballast will probably be installed.

And which LED tube can I now operate with which ballast?

Our EM (electromagnetic) and UN (universal) types are suitable for CCG operation. The fluorescent tube should be exchanged 1:1 for the LED tube, the existing starter is replaced by the supplied LED starter. We also recommend removing the compensation capacitor.

Our HF (High Frequency) and UN lamps are suitable for luminaires with ECG. The tubes are also replaced 1:1, but the compatibility must be checked in advance using the compatibility list. If the combination is not listed, the lamp must not be replaced under any circumstances.

By the way: LED tubes in EM and UN versions are also suitable for operation on 230V mains voltage. However, your luminaire must be suitable for operation or converted.

Detailed information for electricians is also available in our Installation instructions.
